For most people who wear glasses or contacts, yes. The cost of an annual eye exam and a new pair of glasses can often exceed the total annual premium of a vision plan. It provides predictable costs for your eye care needs.
Even for those with perfect vision, a plan can be valuable for its preventive care benefits, as a routine eye exam can detect early signs of other health issues.
Most vision plans are designed to help with the costs of routine, preventive eye care. A typical plan will offer benefits that help pay for:
• An annual eye exam (often for a small copay).
• An allowance towards the cost of prescription eyeglasses (lenses and frames).
• An allowance towards the cost of prescription contact lenses, often as an alternative to glasses.
Your regular health insurance plan covers your eyes for medical issues, such as injuries, infections (like pink eye), glaucoma, or cataracts. It is for treating diseases of the eye.
Vision insurance is separate and covers routine, non-medical eye care. This includes wellness exams to check your vision prescription and materials like glasses and contacts. The two plans work together to cover different aspects of your eye health.
An allowance is a set dollar amount that your vision plan will pay towards the cost of your frames or contact lenses. For example, your plan might have a $150 frame allowance.
If you choose frames that cost $200, you would pay the remaining $50 out-of-pocket. If you choose frames that cost less than the allowance, you typically don't get the difference back. It's a key benefit that significantly reduces the cost of new eyewear.
Most standard vision plans require you to choose one or the other. Your allowance will typically be applied either to the cost of new eyeglass frames and lenses OR to the cost of a supply of contact lenses for the year.
Some more comprehensive plans may offer a small benefit for both, but it's common to have to choose which one you'll use your primary benefit on for that plan year.
Standard prescription lenses are typically covered up to a certain point (often for a fixed copay). Optional lens enhancements like anti-glare coatings, scratch-resistance, or photochromic lenses (that darken in the sun) are often available at a discounted rate through your vision plan, but you will usually pay an additional amount for them.
A vision network is a group of eye doctors (optometrists and ophthalmologists) and eyewear retailers that have agreed to provide services and materials at a discounted rate for plan members. VSP and EyeMed are two of the largest vision networks in the United States.
To get the most value from your plan, you will need to see a provider who is in your plan's network.
Most vision plans operate on a 12 or 24-month cycle for each benefit. For example, you might be eligible for a new eye exam every 12 months, new eyeglass lenses every 12 months, and new frames every 24 months. It's important to check the specific frequency for each benefit in your plan details.
While the material benefits (glasses/contacts) may be less immediate, vision insurance is still valuable for preventive care. A comprehensive eye exam is an important part of your overall health routine.
During an exam, an eye doctor can spot early signs of serious health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, sometimes before you have any other symptoms. A vision plan makes this annual check-up very affordable.
A copay is a small, fixed fee you pay for a service. For vision plans, it's very common to have a low copay for your annual eye exam. For example, you might pay just $10 or $15 for your exam, and the vision plan covers the rest of the cost. This is one of the primary benefits of having a vision plan.
